Rowallan Castle Host PGA of Scotland Tartan Tour

Scott Henderson (l) congratulated by Rowallan Castle official May 2017

Rowallan Castle 36 Hole OOM Challenge

Aberdonian Scott Henderson, Kings Links Golf Centre’s long-serving tour pro, scored his first Order of Merit tournament win for quite some time in a tight finish to the Rowallan Castle 36-hole OOM Challenge.

Henderson, 47, European Tour Rookie of the Year in 1997, the year after he won the Northern Open in a gale at Cruden Bay, had five birdies (short fifth, seventh, short eighth, long 13th  and 14th, offset by two bogeys (fourth and 11th) in halves of 33 (two under) and 35 (one under) for a three-under-par 68 to add to his opening 70.

His four-under-par total of 138 won him the £1,200 first prize by one shot from Steven O’Hara (North Lanarkshire Leisure) who had the round of the day, a five-under-par 66, which could not quite make up the  leeway after a first-round 73.
O’Hara had an eagle 3 at the par-5 third and five birdies in halves of 32 and 34.
His third bogey of the day came at the 18th which cost him a play-off against Henderson. Steven had to settle for the £900 runner-up prize.

Sam Binning (Mearns Castle Golf Academy) earned £700 for third place on 140 (71-69). He parred the last six holes after birdies at the third, fourth, 10th and 12th in halves of 35-34.

Overnight co-leaders Paul McKechnie and Gareth Wright failed to break par at the final attempt. Wright, with only one birdie on his card, had a 72 for 142 and a share of fourth place for a £332.50 payslip.

McKechnie had five birdies but also a triple bogey 7 at the 11th and double bogey 5s at two short holes, the second and the eighth in scoring a 73 for 141 and a share of eighth place for a £200 reward. Rowallan would like to thank all of the PGA staff, The Glasshouse Restaurant and Robert and his team for their hard work on the lead up to and during the event.

Day 2

The International Tri-Nations Test Match between Scotland, Australia and South Africa’s men’s elite teams again saw some fantastic scoring from these very talented players.

This time the low score on the day came from Craig Ross (Scotland) with a great 67 followed by Kyle McClatchie (South Africa) with a 68. Ross’s score helped Scotland move up the leader board to finish tied 1st with Australia in the team event.

Day 1

The International Tri-Nations Test Match between Scotland, Australia and South Africa’s men’s elite team saw some fantastic scoring from these very talented players.

Playing from the championship tees where the previous course record was 75, the players didn’t waste any time on setting new records. With a 71 posted in the first group and only lasting as the record for 20 minutes until a 68 was posted. An hour later the record was broken once again with a 65 by Cameron Davis from Australia. Below is Cameron’s card from today, I think what makes this record even more impressive is the two bogeys to finish.

4 3 5 4 3 4 4 3 5    36 3 4 4 5 4 4 5 3 4 35    71
4 2 4 3 3 4 4 2 4    30 3 3 4 4 4 4 4 4 5 35   65

Congratulations to Cameron from all at Rowallan.

The team event where the format was best 3 out of 4 scores saw Australia team 1 and 2 take the lead over Scotland who are placed in 3rd. Below are the team results:
1st Australia 1 – 2
2nd Australia 2 Par
3rd Scotland 1 +1
4th South Africa 1 +2
5th Scotland 2 +6
6th South Africa 2 +11

Good luck to everyone playing tomorrow.

Thanks,
David
