2016 – 2017 Winter Programme

castle8

Now that the summer competitive season has drawn to a close we will be starting our autumn renovations. We will begin hollow coring greens this week with a 12mm diameter tine at 2.5” spacing. This will remove a significant amount of the thatch that has built up and allow air into the profile. Regular sand dressings will be applied over the coming weeks along with a granular fertiliser to promote some growth and infill.

This programme will cause some disruption but is absolutely necessary for the long-term benefit of the greens and all efforts will be made to restore surfaces in the shortest possible timescale. Localised areas of greens will also be overseeded with a traditional Bent/Fescue seed mix.

The tees will receive a similar programme once the greens have been completed. Tees along with many of the fairways have already been overseeded and germination is visible on many areas. This has been carried out using high quality dwarf ryegrass cultivars.

We will be moving onto the mat at hole 8 shortly for the winter period. This will give us a chance to restore grass cover prior to colder temperatures kicking in.

Our main priorities this winter will be drainage and aeration. Initially we will be dealing with areas on a number of holes where field drains have failed causing surface water issues along with a number of bunkers where soft spots have developed. If the weather plays ball, we would hope to build on and introduce new drainage systems on other fairways. Aeration will include both slit and solid tining on all areas of the golf course and will be scheduled as often as possible to allow good air movement and help develop the root structure and mass.

We also have the materials in stock to upgrade the path which services the 9th yellow tee.

By mid-February our thoughts then turn to bunker renovations prior to the start of another season.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact David or myself on david@rowallancastle.com or robert@rowallancastle.com

Overview

This will be a Saturday competition played over 12 holes (front 9, 17, 18 and 19). Each Saturday’s score will go towards creating an average score for the final on Saturday 25th February. On the final Saturday we will calculate your average score taken from your best 6 scores out of a possible 13 competitions over the winter period and add that with your score on the final Saturday to find the winner. For example:

Final Day February 25th 22.5 (Average) + 20 on the day = 42.5

Format/Handicap

The format of the competition will be stableford with two thirds of your handicap allowance. If you win an event your handicap will be reduced by a full shot and by 0.5 if you come second. Similarly, if you finish last your handicap will increase by 0.5 Play will be from the red or yellow tees and winter rules will apply.

Entries, Sweep & 2’s and Scorecard return

To enter on the day, we will run like a normal medal through the shop. Sweep entry is £2 and if you enter the sweep you will receive an extra 3 points onto your score that day. £1 of the sweep money will go towards the end of winter grand prize. We will run a 2’s competition on these days as well and each Saturday there will be a sweep pay out for the winner of that day. The computer will not be set up for these events as it is only 12 holes but scorecards can be posted in the clubhouse box or through the letterbox in at the shop.

Please note: As the competition is over 12 holes you are more than welcome to play all 19 holes that day.

Medal Update:

On Saturday we have the Senior Club Championship and medal played from the white tees. Followed by a yellow tee stable ford on Sunday. On Wednesday the 10th we have the MFQ #9 from the yellow tees. I have had a few queries as to the reasons for some recent disqualifications in the last competition and to help avoid these I have copied the R&A ruling on the player’s responsibilities as to completing the scorecard.

“In any round of a handicap competition, the competitor must ensure that his handicap is recorded on his score card before it is returned to the committee. If no handicap is recorded on his score card before it is returned, or if the recorded handicap is higher than that to which he is entitled and this affects the number of strokes received, he is disqualified from the handicap competition; otherwise, the score stands. Note: It is the player’s responsibility to know the holes at which handicap strokes are to be given or received.

After completion of the round, the “competitor” should check his score for each hole and settle any doubtful points with the committee. He must ensure that the marker or markers have signed the score card, sign the score card himself and return it to the committee as soon as possible.”

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 6-6b: Disqualification.
