Rowallan Castle Host PGA of Scotland Tartan Tour

Scott Henderson (l) congratulated by Rowallan Castle official May 2017

Rowallan Castle 36 Hole OOM Challenge

Aberdonian Scott Henderson, Kings Links Golf Centre’s long-serving tour pro, scored his first Order of Merit tournament win for quite some time in a tight finish to the Rowallan Castle 36-hole OOM Challenge.

Henderson, 47, European Tour Rookie of the Year in 1997, the year after he won the Northern Open in a gale at Cruden Bay, had five birdies (short fifth, seventh, short eighth, long 13th  and 14th, offset by two bogeys (fourth and 11th) in halves of 33 (two under) and 35 (one under) for a three-under-par 68 to add to his opening 70.

His four-under-par total of 138 won him the £1,200 first prize by one shot from Steven O’Hara (North Lanarkshire Leisure) who had the round of the day, a five-under-par 66, which could not quite make up the  leeway after a first-round 73.
O’Hara had an eagle 3 at the par-5 third and five birdies in halves of 32 and 34.
His third bogey of the day came at the 18th which cost him a play-off against Henderson. Steven had to settle for the £900 runner-up prize.

Sam Binning (Mearns Castle Golf Academy) earned £700 for third place on 140 (71-69). He parred the last six holes after birdies at the third, fourth, 10th and 12th in halves of 35-34.

Overnight co-leaders Paul McKechnie and Gareth Wright failed to break par at the final attempt. Wright, with only one birdie on his card, had a 72 for 142 and a share of fourth place for a £332.50 payslip.

McKechnie had five birdies but also a triple bogey 7 at the 11th and double bogey 5s at two short holes, the second and the eighth in scoring a 73 for 141 and a share of eighth place for a £200 reward. Rowallan would like to thank all of the PGA staff, The Glasshouse Restaurant and Robert and his team for their hard work on the lead up to and during the event.

Captains Letter 2017

Tri Nations Event

Dear Member,

Another new season at Rowallan is finally upon us. The winter does seem to last forever in Scotland but it was great to see such involvement in our winter series event. It was by far the greatest success we’ve had with an off-season competition and will hope to continue it in the future. Congratulations again to winner Tommy Webster and to all who took part. With the number’s we had playing it augers well for the new season proper, and hopefully we will have more members than ever competing in all competitions this year.

With that in mind we have more medal options than ever before, including the first Rowallan Open and our first Doc-Thom counting event, both great additions to the Ayrshire calendar. This season also brings a new Ayrshire Handicap league, which along with the scratch league gives members the chance to play for the club and play some other great Ayrshire courses.

I must say it is a great privilege to be captain of RCGC, I’m going into my sixth season as a member and it is a fantastic club to be part of. From improvements on the course, increased numbers playing and more competitions than ever things have been rapidly progressing over that time and we continue to look at ways in which we can further progress. We have our first social event of the year next Friday, which will be a fun quiz night. Hopefully we will see plenty members, partners and friends coming along. The success of these nights will be largely measured on attendance and if you have any ideas for the future please let us know.

Finally, many thanks to my predecessor Andy Macleod who was a fine Captain. Last year especially was no ordinary year. The coordination of the marshalling team for the Open Championship was no easy task and the success of that week for our team was in no small part thanks to him. Letting him win the play-off last week in our Captain vs past Captain match was the least I could do!

We have our first counting medal tomorrow, and the numbers look great on the BRS system, I’m sure you can’t wait to get started. Play well!

Wedding Open Day success!

With over 400 people through our doors in January, its safe to say our Wedding Open Day was a success.

Thank you to everyone who came along, to The Glasshouse Restaurant for providing the delightful refreshments and to all the wedding suppliers who showcased their beautiful work.

Here’s what some of the people had to say:

“We loved the Wedding Open Day and having the opportunity to see around Rowallan Castle.” Jackie, bride

“Just wanted to say thank you and well done on a successful day.  I’ve already had a provisional booking for 2018 which is fantastic!” Tom, supplier

I love showing people around the castle so if you missed the Open Day but are newly engaged and would like a private viewing then just drop me an email Liz@rowallancastle.com, we’d be delighted to host your special day.
